McCurtain County, located in southeastern Oklahoma, was named after a prominent Choctaw family. Prior to the 20th century, wagon trails and ferries were the primary travel routes in McCurtain County. In 1902, the Arkansas and Choctaw Railway was constructed and towns were established along the route. In the early 20th century, forestry became a major industry in the area and remains at the forefront of local commerce today.
The beautiful Ouachita National Forest covers a large area of McCurtain County. Beavers Bend State Park features lush scenery, accommodations and endless activities both in the park and on Broken Bow Lake. In Broken Bow, the Indian Memorial Museum houses artifacts of all kinds. The Museum of the Red River in Idabel contains cultural artifacts from the native people of the Americas, as well as a dinosaur skeleton found near the museum.
