Named after Douglas H. Johnston, governor of the Chickasaw Nation from 1898-1902 and 1904-1939, Johnston County is located in south-central Oklahoma. Early travel routes in the county included military roads and the Texas Road. In the early 1900s, railroads came into the area. Mining has been a major industry in the county since the 19th century and has included everything from granite and limestone to sand. The Chickasaw Nation Capitol Building in Tishomingo was built in 1898 and housed the Chickasaw Nation government until 1907. Today, the building features exhibits and displays of Chickasaw history, and the Chickasaw Council House Museum on the capitol grounds showcases Chickasaw artifacts as well as the original council house. Camp Bond near Tishomingo offers accommodations and activities.
