Located on the site of a Confederate outpost established to guard the stage road leading to the site of Boggy Depot, the Atoka Museum & Civil War Cemetery are local gems. Established in 1979, the museum offers a unique glimpse into southeast Oklahoma's history, with exhibits on the area’s prehistory, the Trail of Tears, the Butterfield Stage Line and homegrown talents like bull rider Lane Frost and country music legend Reba McEntire.

The Civil War Cemetery is the only designated Confederate cemetery in Oklahoma, containing the remains of soldiers who died during a measles epidemic in 1862. The soldiers were forced to stop at the camp on their way from Fort Smith to Fort McColloch when the illness swept through the regiment. Crude sandstone markers still stand today where many of the soldiers were buried. In 1988, members of the Atoka County Historical Society researched at the National Archives to help identify several soldiers and new headstones were placed alongside the old.
