Atoka County, located in southeastern Oklahoma, was formed in 1907 from Choctaw land. The county was named after a Choctaw warrior, Captain Atoka, who lived in the area. Now a ghost town, Boggy Depot was formerly a bustling center of the county and was the site of the state’s first Masonic Lodge, founded in 1869. Industry in the county has included coal and limestone mining as well as forestry. Scenic McGee Creek State Park offers water recreation, hiking and camping in Atoka County, and family-owned Cimarron Cellars in Caney is the oldest operating winery in Oklahoma. The Atoka Museum, Civil War Cemetery & Visitors Center near Atoka features the only Confederate cemetery in Oklahoma.
