Named after William Jennings Bryan, a presidential candidate and contributor to the 1907 Oklahoma Constitution, Bryan County is located in southern Oklahoma. Fort Washita, founded in 1842, and Fort McCulloch, founded in 1862, were early military posts in the county. Today, the Fort Washita Historic Site & Museum near Durant is open to visitors for a glimpse at Oklahoma’s military history. Known as the “Magnolia Capitol of Oklahoma,” Durant hosts the annual Magnolia Festival. The capitol of the Choctaw nation is located in Durant, and the Choctaw Casino Resort located there features a hotel, gaming, dining and more.
