There may be a never-ending battle over whether Chicago or New York-style pizza reigns supreme, but these eight great pizza restaurants have taken the best of both worlds and made their own Oklahoma-style pizza pie that’s guaranteed to please. Read on to discover some of the best pizzerias in Oklahoma.
Hideaway Pizza – Stillwater
Ask any native Oklahoman their opinion on the state’s best pizza joint and Hideaway Pizza will undoubtedly make it to the top of the list. A Stillwater institution since 1957, Hideaway Pizza has stayed loyal to the same tried-and-true recipes since the beginning. With 28 specialty pizzas, five sauces and 35 different toppings and cheeses, there are just too many delicious combinations to count.
Try the popular Hideaway Special for a different topping on each slice, or order any of Hideaway’s specialty pizzas for mouthwatering combinations of red sauce, smoked bacon, mini-meatballs, fresh basil, roasted garlic and countless other flavors. Though the pizza is the star of the show, folks also rave about the fried mushrooms dipped in creamy ranch dressing. See all Hideaway Pizza locations.
Sam & Ella's Chicken Palace – Tahlequah
Some of the state’s best pizza comes to roost at Sam & Ella's Chicken Palace in Tahlequah. Aside from the quirky name, which pays tribute to the chicken-themed décor, there’s not much chicken on the menu. However, there is delicious, hot pizza and plenty of it.
Start off with an order of Caps, mushrooms stuffed with spinach artichoke dip and covered in mozzarella cheese before baked, and then dig into a slice of Rock Island Red, a local favorite that combines red sauce, a layer of ham drizzled with honey, mushrooms, sweet onions, pineapple and mozzarella. Fun fact: American Idol winner Carrie Underwood worked here during college.
Savastano's Pizzeria – Tulsa
If there’s a deeper dish pie in Oklahoma than Savastano's Pizzeria, we dare you to find it. Their signature Chicago-style deep dish, loaded down with traditional toppings such as pepperoni, Italian sausage, sautéed mushrooms and more, stands a whopping two inches high, 14 inches in diameter and weighs an incredible eight pounds. With pizzas named after Chicago landmarks and even a few Chicago hot dogs on the menu, it’s no wonder Savastano’s is known as Tulsa’s “little slice of Chicago.” Each pizza is matched with a beer or wine selection right on the menu, making pairings an absolute breeze.
The Wedge Pizzeria – Oklahoma City
One step inside the door at either location of The Wedge Pizzeria in Oklahoma City and you’ll be welcomed by the scents of pecan wood and top-notch ingredients like truffle oil and roasted garlic. This wood-fire oven pizzeria offers seven specialty pizzas ranging from the Italian Stallion with port wine and sundried tomato sauce, mozzarella, roasted fennel and Italian sausage to the Napoli with toasted walnuts, Asiago cheese, arugula, rosemary and pancetta. Guests will enjoy indoor or outdoor seating and a variety of appetizer and fresh salad selections before digging in to the divine pizza found here. Don’t forget to complement your pizza with an Italian soda, glass of wine or a serving of gelato.
Grateful Head Pizza Oven & Tap Room – Hochatown
Nestled in the beautiful Ouachita Mountains near the shores of Broken Bow Lake, Grateful Head Pizza Oven & Tap Room takes top honors for both its location and tasty creations. The laid back vibe of this popular pizza joint is enhanced by the on-site beer garden featuring live music nearly every weekend.
Grateful Head’s bestselling pizza by far is the Psychedelic Supremo, which combines hamburger, pepperoni, Canadian bacon, sausage, bell peppers, red onions, mushrooms and black olives. Paired with a frosty cold mug of draft beer or soda, this pizza is a must-try.
Jo's Famous Pizza – Purcell & Edmond
Jo's Famous Pizza in Purcell has been serving topping-heavy pizzas to customers since 1962. Known for a variety of specialty pies with unique toppings, Jo’s serves up flavor combinations that will please any palate. Build your own pizza at Jo’s and choose from traditional toppings like pepperoni, Canadian bacon and meatballs, or go out on a limb and try a pie topped with everything from hot links and chopped corned beef to jalapenos and sun-dried tomatoes.
From the Taco Pizza covered in seasoned ground beef, cheddar cheese and black olives to the Bacon, Jalapeno and Cheddar Burger Pizza with helpings of mustard, lettuce and tomatoes, Jo’s knows how to make pizzas the whole family will love. Sauce choices include Jo’s house-made red sauce, olive oil and garlic glaze, Louisiana hot sauce or Ponca City’s very own Head Country BBQ sauce. Try the original pizzaria in Purcell, or the Jo's Famous Pizza location in Edmond.
Andolini's Pizzeria – Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Jenks & Owasso
From the pistachio pesto that’s made from freshly ground basil leaves, extra virgin olive oil and pistachios to the mozzarella that’s smoked using hickory chips, Andolini's Pizzeria is all about doing things the right way. With dough made from specially milled Oklahoma flour and with house-made mozzarella topping the pizzas, you’ll be able to taste Andolini’s commitment to detail in each bite at each Tulsa metro location.
Feast on garlic knots, Italian antipasto plates or bruschetta before enjoying hand-tossed pizza topped with premium toppings such as gorgonzola, prosciutto and roasted red peppers. Vegetarians will enjoy the Florentine Pizza featuring olive oil, garlic, spinach, parmesan and artichoke hearts, while meat-lovers will go crazy over the Tenbysimmo, a hearty combination of pepperoni, Canadian bacon, Genoa salami, pastrami, ground beef and Italian sausage.
Empire Slice House - Edmond, Nichols Hills, Oklahoma City & Tulsa
Known for their New York-style pizza served by the slice, Empire Slice House in Oklahoma City — or “Empire” as it’s called by locals — is a popular late night dining option. Originally based in Oklahoma City, there are now Empire Slice House locations in Edmond, Nichols Hills and Tulsa. Sample a variety of slices to pick a favorite or order a pie, but be warned: Empire’s pizzas come in one size only, and it’s huge. Set in a chill atmosphere with great tunes and an impressive beer selection, Empire rotates their pizza-by-the-slice menu daily, so there’s always something new to try. If you’re a mushroom fan, order the Fungus Among Us, a crispy, cheesy pie topped with cremini and shiitake mushrooms, spinach and truffle oil. Their garlic knots also receive rave reviews.
