Canadian County, named after the wide Canadian River that flows across the county, is home to the historic Chisholm Trail, Fort Reno and sections of Route 66. El Reno is the county seat of Canadian County and the courthouse was constructed in the mid-1960s. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, railroads were constructed across Canadian County and El Reno became a central hub of the area's railroad transportation. Historic Fort Reno offers a look into Oklahoma's military past with guided tours and events, while the Canadian County Historical Museum provides visitors with a look into the everyday lives of past county residents. El Reno also hosts the annual Fried Onion Burger Day Festival, where the world's largest fried onion burger is put on display for festival-goers. Yukon, hometown of Garth Brooks, hosts the Oklahoma Czech Festival each year.

In 2000, census records showed 87,697 people living in Canadian County. Countless assets exist for tracing genealogy in Canadian County including legal records, cemetery records and a local genealogical society.
