In 2011, Alva Mural Society commissioned artists Robbie Pierce and Don Prechtel to create a mural highlighting the journey of Nathan Boone, Daniel Boone’s youngest son, through Woods County. As portrayed in this “Nathan Boone” mural, explorer and military officer Nathan visited the Cimarron River salt flats west of Freedom, Oklahoma on July 1, 1843. While here, the Boone party led an exploration force of Dragoons from Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Today, the salt flats are part of the Cargill solar salt production facility.
