Located in northwestern Oklahoma, Dewey County was named after Admiral George Dewey. The bones of two mammoths have been excavated in Dewey County and were found to be between 143,000 and 166,000 years old. Much later, but before the area was settled, the area was used as a travel corridor by the Plains Indians, then French Canadian traders and finally U.S. military expeditions. Agriculture and livestock have been the major economic factors in Dewey County. In the early 1900s, the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway and the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway both helped to expand markets and grow the county’s economy.
