The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre was one of the worst massacres in US history, claiming hundreds of lives and reducing Greenwood District's 40 square blocks of prosperous, Black-owned businesses, newspapers, artistic venues and churches to rubble.
This devastating event has only recently been acknowledged on a national level, but museums and organizations like Greenwood Rising and the Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission are ensuring Greenwood’s history is never forgotten while breathing new life into this historic area. A century later, Greenwood has been redefined as a dynamic place of reconciliation, history, art and culture for new generations.
